Bonjour !!! It’s the 16th of the month again, which means it’s time for the French Curves Challenge – an outfit photo challenge with the French touch, created by the beautiful, Vanoue, of The Curvy and Curly Closet.
If you don’t speak French, fear not, my dears! As always, an English translation will follow, just scroll on down!!!
Il est encore le 16 du mois !!! Temps pour un nouveau French Curves Challenge – la collaboration entre les blogueuses francophones de taille plus, crée par la belle, Vanoue, de The Curvy and Curly Closet.
And now for the English version!
The theme this month: SUEDE
With the 70s trend back in full force, suede is everywhere in fashion right now!
Rich in texture, it brings a chic and luxurious element to your wardrobe; and even if we tend to associate it with the 70s, when mixed with more modern pieces, suede can integrate easily into any outfit.
For the challenge, I chose two different pieces — this pretty faux-suede jacket (ok yes, I’m cheating, but shhhhh!) from Penningtons, and these cute, thrifted little yellow suede loafers from Figure First, which are second hand, but in perfect shape.
Together, with an ultra modern combo of this striped dress from Addition Elle, and my fave pair of jeans…
These suede pieces leave the 70s behind in exchange for a contemporary and super charming look!
Be sure to check out the fab suede looks from all the other French Curvettes here, as well as on Facebook, and Instagram too!!! And remember to use the hashtags #FrenchCurvesOOTD and #FlightOfTheFatGirl on all your style pics!!!

Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped, turned upside down
And I’d like to take a minute just sit right there
I’ll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air
All my fellow 90s kids don’t need to hear more than a word or two to know that this the beginning of the instantly recognizable theme song from The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air!!!
This had to be my favourite show growing up; it was funny, there was always a good message, and Will. Smith. Was. HOT!!! (Uhh, still is actually.)
Naturally, since we’re seeing a serious revival of all things 90s, this show has a whole new following. This comes as no surprise to me – it has an appeal that will endure the test of time; but still, how freaking cool is it that my son watches it on Netflix!?!? (Cue the super excited mom, who just heard the theme song to her childhood playing on her son’s phone and now can’t stop talking to him about how awesome it was back in the day… Cue several eye rolls from said son as well.)
You can only imagine my delight when I came across this Fresh Prince crop top from Rebdolls!!! (Actually maybe you can’t… I was embarrassingly excited.)
Since I love mixing styles, I’ve paired it with this showstopping yellow midi skirt from ELOQUII, a fabulous statement necklace from Revolucion Jewelry, my vintage Burberry trench, (thanks Papa) and cute blue flats for a bold, flashy look that the Will would surely approve!
The 80’s were… How do I put this politely? An interesting time for fashion. From shoulder pads to parachute pants, it was definitely a decade of extremes.
Although we like to think of todays fashion as much more balanced than it ever was in the past, (look back 20 years from now and see if you still agree – I dare you!) we still draw most of our inspiration from eras gone by, the indulgent 80’s included.
We see its influence in today’s oversized tops, harem pants, big, bold, statement jewelry, and most attention-grabbingly, (is that a word?) in my opinion, the resurgence of neon colors over the past few years.
It is impossible to ignore neon! It’s bright, vibrant, and in your face. It has exploded back into the fashion scene and can now be seen worn by everyone, from little kids in neon sneakers right through to mature, business women in gorgeous neon blouses.
Now, I haven’t yet found a neon blouse in my size that I cannot live without, but I did find this amazing, neon yellow bib necklace at Forever 21, that I knew I just had to make mine from the moment I first saw it.
I’ve paid subtle homage to the decade, without overdoing it, by wearing this great, statement necklace with some classic 80’s style, black stirrup pants, a fun, neon orange ring and some bright, bubblegum pink lipstick; and I’ve kept the look toned down and modern by pairing it all with a great black and white sweatshirt from Forever 21+ that I purchased a while back, and some cute, simple, inexpensive, black flats from Wal Mart.
Part of me secretly wants to see what I’d look like, if instead of the sweatshirt and flats, I went with a structured, shoulder pad bearing blazer and a pair of neon yellow, high heeled pumps – but, shhh! Don’t tell anyone!!!
There is something about light yellow – an edible quality, almost. It’s comforting and rich like smooth, creamy butter being spread on golden toast at breakfast time. It’s calming, relaxing, yet bright and sunny, like morning.
It was this exact attribute, this buttery, yellow deliciousness which drew me to this top in the first place. When I picked it up, I hadn’t even given the gorgeous print much attention as I was so drawn to the delicate color behind it; but now that it hangs in my closet, I can fully appreciate it in all of its splendor.
I’ve paired this lovely piece with simple, basic black leggings, gold jewelry, a pretty gold flat with a sparkly captoe and light pink nails for a clean, elegant, daytime look that is as delectable as freshly churned butter.
(It’s not hard to tell that this has been written by a fat girl… Haha!)
