September Recap

I’ve been seeing so many other bloggers doing little recaps if their outfit posts at the end of each month, and I figured I’d jump on the bandwagon and start doing them too!

There’s something so satisfying about seeing your favourite styles all grouped together before your eyes, so here are mine:

Fab red plaid shirt from Addition Elle, with distressed denim from Penningtons.

Bright cheerful yellow midi skirt from ELOQUII, with a funky Fresh Prince crop top from Rebdolls, and statement necklace from Revolucion Jewelry.

And finally, rich, faux fur vest and pleather skirt from Addition Elle and decadent lace bra from Hips and Curves.

September was a good month, but I’m looking forward to everything I have in store for October!!! So much to come!!! Stay tuned!!!

Nude All Day, Nude All Night

Don’t get TOO excited, now! It’s just a dress… Ha…

The moment I saw this dress I simply new it had to be mine – I’d been waiting for a minimalist, nude dress for so long, and this fab strapless midi from Custom Plus was perfection!

These shoes, however had been my nemesis ever since the day after the occasion I had bought them for. I designed them myself on shoesofprey.com for a wedding and have had such a ridiculously hard time working them into my wardrobe – partly because they are a little extravagant, but mostly because I had almost stopped wearing silver for a while, and they just never seemed to be a good fit with what I had on. I had them stashed in the back if my closet, and had almost forgotten about them completely, when I stumbled upon a stunning, multi-coloured jewel encrusted statement necklace on Instagram, from Toronto based, Revolucion Jewelry. I lusted after it for a while, and finally placed my order. After receiving it, I immediately envisioned this bold, eccentric piece with my kitten heeled, glittery, bowed, perfect disasters & my new dress, and everything just fell into place.

Since this dress is so versatile, I decided to wear it two ways – day to evening.

The first, being the daytime look; and in keeping with the recent dress-over-pants trend, I paired it with my Parasuco jeans from Addition Elle and my white, 3/4 length sleeve blazer from Torrid. I had been wanting to try these shoes with a boyfriend jean, and they just worked, even for daytime, with this simple, sophisticated look. All I needed was a nude lippie, and a pop of colour from my hot pink, Kate Spade tote, and I was ready to go!!!

For the transition into an evening look, I wore the dress as a stand alone piece, displaying all (and I mean all) my curves in all their roly-poly glory! With the addition of my gorgeous Revolucion Jewelry necklace, a switcheroo from tote to nude clutch (Aldo), the addition of a colourful, shell bracelet, purchased at a local market in Haiti, and a deep red lip, my look was transformed from daytime chic to evening glam in no time!!!

Channeling Frida

20140803-224542-81942632.jpg

Yesterday I came across a picture on Instagram from a Canadian owned and Toronto based company, Revolucion Jewelry who’s entire line is inspired by the fabulous, Frida Kahlo. On their website they state:

Our mission is to encourage and give women the confidence to dress bold and make a statement with their jewelry. It is a hand picked collection of statement pieces for fashion revolutionaries, free thinkers and daring women alike. These statement pieces are inspired by Frida Kahlo, Mexican artist and revolutionist that began wearing statement necklaces before any of us.

Can I just say? I LOVE this! Frida has not only become somewhat of a pop culture icon, representing body positivity, feminism, and freethinking, but also, just so happens to be a major inspiration of mine, both as an artist and a strong woman who broke the rules of fashion and beauty.

Since I was feeling inspired, I decided to use her notoriously vibrant, flower and statement jewelry wearing image as the basis for my look.

Re-creating her famous unibrow would have been going overboard, so instead, I applied winged liner to get that same intense look about my eyes that Frida was known for in her many self-portraits.

This wasn’t an easy task for someone with hooded eyelids and a lot of facial asymmetry due to three bouts of Bell’s palsy in the past, but I think I pulled it off. Since I have very fair, freckled skin, I went with a dark brown liquid liner, instead of the typical black, to soften the look, and not create too harsh a contrast.

As for her moustache – I’m due for a wax, so it’s there… That counts, right?

Hot pink, red and aubergine coloured flowers up around my top knot, a sheer, red, peasant style blouse, a bold, blended lip, and bold jewelry were the perfect details to really capture Frida’s signature look; but the challenge was all in making it wearable in real life, and not just a “costume.”

To bring the look together, I paired it with classic, sophisticated pieces, which is a technique that applies to making any eccentric or extravagant accessories work in your wardrobe.

A black pencil skirt, cream coloured blazer and pretty, pink, pointy-toed flats complete the ensemble, for a chic, yet whimsical Frida Kahlo inspired look that truly captures her essence.
