Harem Pants For The Tummy Conscious

IMG_6258.JPG
So, I like to browse my blog’s search terms from time to time (okay, a lot).

For those of you who don’t know what these are, they are the terms that people type into their search engines which lead them to clicking on my blog, and you can believe me when I say that many if these terms are downright hilarious! I’ve seen search terms going from “fat nude white girl” all the way to “big black sexy naked beauty.”

Yup. Nudity is almost always in there somewhere; but the second most common search terms I see go something along the lines of “how to wear plus size harem pants.”

I gather, from how often these search terms come up, that harem pants continue to be a coveted, yet intimidating style among the full figured community, and I totally understand. I was, at one time very much nervous about wearing them too.

See, and I know I’ve discussed this with you many times before, I have a serious case of the bum-tum (tummy that looks like a second butt in the front), and harem pants have proven to be a huge struggle to pull off (not literally off, that part is easy).

I wrote another post a while back (here) about with a tip on wearing a peplum top, or belt to help disguise your tummy. I still love this idea, but I’ve come up with another.

As you can see, I’ve paired the same harem pants (Forever 21+) from my other post, with this absolutely delicious blue, vintage style tee from Addition Elle; and instead of tucking it in and putting my belly on display, I’ve left it untucked, except for a small bit of it on one side. This way, you have nearly full tummy coverage while still showing off the signature high waist and pockets of the pants at the same time. It’s the best of both worlds!

Pair the ensemble with colourful flats and a bright handbag for a casual, chic, put together look that incorporates the on trend look of harem pants with the comfort of knowing you’re tummy is hidden.

Rules Were Meant To Be Broken

Rules Were Meant To Be Broken

Ladies, forget everything your mother told you. Forget everything you thought you knew. Mixing prints, or print clashing,  is here to stay… And it is glorious!!!

The old rule of “never mix two prints” has been thrown out the window and it has made way for so many amazing combinations! Florals with stripes, pinstripe with tribal – you name, it can be done; and all without the fear that someone might look at you and think you’re some sort of crazy person! Sweet!

This weekend I was inspired, both by an article I shared on the Flight of the Fat Girl Facebook page on mixing prints, as well as a comment from a fan, who wondered if polka dots were flattering on a full figured woman. So, I decided to play around a little.

I’ve paired my awesome Instant Vintage polka dot jeans (Addition Elle) with this decadent, Love & Legend printed multi-way vest (also Addition Elle), tan cami from Forever 21+, and these adorable blue and white striped wedges from Walmart to create a mix and match look that seems to just meld together as though it was always meant to be.

So, dare to try something new! Mix your prints! Experiment! If you’re reluctant, just try something subtle like a tone on tone striped pant, and a great printed scarf; or if you’re looking to make a real statement, go with a couple of amazing bold prints to really get noticed! The possibilities are endless!

Exotic Accessories

Exotic Accessories

An outfit is never complete without accessories, and I picked up a few beautiful, hand crafted pieces at local markets in Haiti, while I was there.

Haiti is filled with resourceful artisans who are capable of creating absolute jewels out of just about anything locally available. When setting foot into a Haitian marketplace you will find, among other things, accessories made of anything from discarded pieces of plastic, which are sculpted and polished into stunning rings and pendants, to wood, or even telephone wire, which is wrapped in string or ribbon to create beautiful bracelets.

These delicate shell necklaces and this gorgeous polished “kòn bèf” (bull horn) pendant were my finds, along with a gorgeous necklace and bracelet set made entirely out of hand strung seeds, which I will show off to you in a future post.

I’ve paired my natural, earthy bobbles with a basic black tank top and leggings from Addition Elle, a light peach colored, cap sleeve top from Forever 21+, which I’ve left open to flow in the breeze and graze my bountiful hips; and my trusty, nude, captoe flats from Payless, for a look of simple, casual perfection with an exotic touch – just right for adding a little Caribbean warmth to a damp, rainy Montreal afternoon.

Harem Pants

Harem Pants

I don’t know about you, and I know everyone is shaped differently; but depending on what I wear, I have, what I like to call “bumtum”. Bumtum, you ask?

Definition of Bumtum: noun \ˈbəmˈtəm\
When your tummy takes on the appearance of a bum when wearing clothes (usually pants) with a seam up the front, thus giving the impression that you not only have butt in the back, but one in the front, too.

So, now that that’s cleared up, lets talk about harem pants. They are everywhere, and have been trending for a while now.  But I’ve been hesitating, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll understand, they can be a bit tricky, because not only are they high-waisted, they also have saggy fronts which can only accentuate your bumtum!  That being said, don’t give up hope!!!  With a little help from shapewear (which I briefly discussed my love/hate relationship with, in my recent post, “Fat Girl Problems“) and the right top or belt, it is possible to make them work!

When I saw these leopard print harem pants from Forever21+ I knew they would be a challenge, but I just wanted to try so badly!!!  I quickly realized that they would be more difficult to wear than I had thought…  My Spanx alone just weren’t cutting it.  I had to break out the big guns and wear my faux leather peplum belt from Addition Elle, which I had nabbed about a year ago, but never really found the right way to wear.  I had tried a couple of looks with it, but they just always looked off, somehow.  Anyway, I figured it was worth a shot, so I went for it, and I think it was exactly what these pants needed!  Since they have a very bold cut and pattern, and the belt is also quite a statement on it’s own, I went with a very simple black top, and black & gold flats to draw some of the attention away from my mostly disguised bumtum.  I can’t say that I was able to hide it completely, but I definitely felt confident with the end result; and, who am I trying to fool, anyhow?  It’s not like having a flatter tummy would trick anyone into thinking I’m skinny!  Haha!

So my advice to you is, if you are a fellow bumtum sufferer, and are looking to try and get in on the harem pant trend:  Always wear shapewear underneath, and try to find a great peplum belt, like this one, or a cute peplum top, which you can belt or wear on its own.  The reality is, with just about every look, even if you think it won’t flatter your body, it never hurts to try, because you may actually be surprised with what you can do to make it work for you!

Flower Power

Flower Power

It’s March!!! And while there’s still a thick layer of snow covering the ground, I am starting to see the light at the end of the long winter tunnel. The days are getting longer, the sun is feeling warmer and just the idea that soon enough we’ll be seeing the spring flowers start to peek up out through the cold ground has me feeling renewed.

So, to celebrate those flowers that will soon making their annual appearance, I’m wearing these fun, floral leggings from Forever21+. They are joyful, bright and just so happen to be extremely comfortable, which is always a bonus!

I’ve paired them with a royal blue, 2-way tank top from Addition Elle, my favorite tone on tone, black leopard print, 3/4 length sleeve jacket from Penningtons, multi-strand, beaded jewelry and my cute, white patent leather Aldo flats for a casual, whimsical look that infuses even more warmth into an already fading winter.

For the Love of Leggings

For the Love of Leggings

It’s official – these leggings are my favorite things EVER.

These are my first printed pair, which I recently ordered from Forever21+ and they are just SO HOT! I mean, I can’t… I can’t even! They are just delicious. I will admit, the prospect of such a loud print on pants scared me at first, but I decided that I loved it too much to let myself be afraid of it!

These leggings are perfect paired with a snug, body hugging, black top to really show off all my curves, and a nice pair of wedges to make my booty pop!

I’m fairly certain my hubby didn’t know what hit him when he saw me in these; but it goes without saying that he liked what he saw!
